Benjamin Pomfret

The new york bridge
Starting in 2013 the replacement of the Tappan Zee bridge has been going on, due to its age and design it is not able to accommodate the cities traffic any longer. Most of the substructure which is the piles and columns is complete. The construction is still going with the assembling of steel girders, road deck panels and segments of the 419-foot main span towers.
The bridge traffic has grown to about 140,000 vehicles per day. This is much more than the original bridge was designed to support. Some of the problems with the current bridge include heavy traffic, narrow lanes and the lack of emergency shoulders can create unsafe driving conditions. The bridge has twice the amount of accidents than any other part of the almost 600-mile through-way.
The bridge will feature a state of the art traffic monitoring system, 8 commuter lanes for cars, an emergency lane, and space to later have the capability to accommodate a commuter rail, as well as a shared use lane for pedestrians and cyclists.

This is the construction of the current bridge.
