Autonomous Driving

An organization called the Upstate Transportation Association in New York is advocating for the state of New York to ban self driving cars from the state's roads for 50 years. This is a very aggressive move by this organization. The call to ban self driving cars or self driving modes for 50 years calls to mind the question of peoples job security. Taxi drivers or truckers may wake up one day and have no job, no career. The state of New York is considering offering ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft to operate throughout the state. Currently, they are only allowed in New York City. On Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the state would embrace the services.

The organization warns that this acceptance would eventually lead to the companies transition to self driving cars. The UTA says that this will wipe out thousands of New Yorker's jobs. Uber has responded and promised 13,000 jobs if it operates in upstate New York, and is testing driverless cars in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Uber's testing in Pittsburg is following up on the failure that was the self driving testing in San Francisco, California. The company lacked the right permits for autonomous driving, state officials in California said. Uber said that they are not giving up on San Francisco, and will double their efforts to work something out with the state of California.

Uber has engineered an "autonomous driving hat" to sit on top of cars to make them be fully autonomous. In Pittsburg, Uber showcased Ford Fusions with their technology hat strapped on the top. However, the Volvos showcased in San Francisco are more of a representation of where the company would like to take their self driving fleet.

The self driving "hat" works using LiDAR, or light detection and range, to create a three dimensional map of the car's surroundings. A colored camera detects the yellow, green, and red lights at a stop light. 20 cameras look for other driving cars, parked cars, cars that are braking, pedestrians, and any other obstacle that could inhibit the car's driving in any way. Antennae are constantly tracking the cars location, allowing it to pinpoint its position to use Uber's own road maps. LiDAR sensors placed around the car detect objects in the front, rear, sides, and blind spots of the car. Finally, a cooling system is installed underneath the car to keep all the technology from overheating.

As Uber makes these advances, more and more jobs done by taxi drivers are put at risk. While Uber has put people out of business, it has still created jobs in every city it is used in. Self driving cars are not as advanced as they seem. Humans are still needed to drive more difficult roads or older roads that might not be in GPS systems. Uber still has opted to map out their own roads instead of using Google Maps or Apple Maps, which leaves room for error. Services like Google Maps have been worked on for years, and can even tell a driver which lane they should be in to get to their destination.

New York organizations main concern is for the jobs of millions of taxi drivers and personal drivers. Uber has about 600,000 drivers in total across the United States, but is constantly expanding and attracting more people to become drivers in the service. Despite the need for human drivers to drive more difficult roads, or people preferring a human driver rather than a driverless car, the overall number of human drivers would decrease. Whether it is accepted or not right now, self driving cars are the way of the future. Whether it be now or in 50 years (when the ban would let up), self driving technology is ever evolving, especially with tech geniuses like Tesla putting so much time and effort into improving their self driving capabilities.
