The construction of the world tallest wood building is
underway, and has just completed the 18th story. The structure is being built
at the University of British Columbia in the Brock Commons. The
building is already 4 months ahead of scheduled, and showcases the
advantages of building with wood. There will now be focus on the interior of
the building and is expected to be finished in May 2017.
The building has a concrete podium and two concrete cores.
The 17 stories are made of cross-laminated-timber floors, supported by wood
columns. This wood building is a great example of how wood products are great to build and support with, and shows the advancements of wood technology is in
the future.
The project when finished is expected to cost an expected
$51.5 million dollars with $47.07 million financed by UBC. This project is showing how Canada's forest industry is
finding new opportunities through advancements in technology and
innovation.
The building reflects UBC's leadership in sustainability construction and their
commitment to providing their students with more and better on-campus housing.
