Norway is an especially hard place to drive due to large fjords which are deep glacial water areas that separate land masses. Several bridges, and a couple of ferry rides are needed to be able to get around.Norway is undertaking a project to build a fully submerged floating traffic tunnel beneath the waves of the Sognefjord, a body of water that runs 3,000 feet wide and 4,000 feet deep.
The tunnel would be attached to big pontoons floating on the surface of the water, and further stabilized by trusses connecting dual tubes. The cylinders would be side to side and allow traffic to flow in both directions. The tunnels would hang around 70 to 100 feet under the surface of the water.
The tunnel would be the first of its kind in the world. Norway has already committed $25 billion in funds toward the project. If all goes according to plan, the Sognefjord tunnels will be completed by 2035. Depending on the success of the tunnel, more floating tunnels will be looked at for other problem areas in Norway's unique landscape. The people in charge of building the tunnels say the floating tunnels could cut north to south cross country drive time in half, from 22 hours to 11 hours.
