Re-Engineering Cumbria, UK

Recently, there have been many new engineering feats in Cumbria, a non-metropolitan county in Northwest England. The projects are meant to improve the functionality of the land and the life of the residents of Cumbria. The major projects involve creating a new and more efficient drainage system, as well as relocating power lines.
Rainwater had been collecting near the railroad tracks and damaging the lines. The solution was to install a new drainage system to direct the water into a nearby stream. A weir was also installed to slow the stream during heavy rainfall. Improvements were made to make sure that the railway is completely safe and in good condition. In order to be successful the team had to face challenges including the uneven landscape. The narrow and winding roads were overcome, and the end result was a better drainage system.
The next project in Cumbria is the power line system. Engineers have begun to replace power lines with 2km underground cable. The purpose of this is to enhance the landscape and views throughout the area. The region is investing 200,000 euros to remove the 50 year old powerless. The only thing that will get in the way is temporary road closures as the construction continues. This project is expected to last until autumn.
