(a look at some of the work benches at Area 404)
Facebook has opened a new research lab located in Menlo Park California. At this lab engineers will be able to test all new products and gadgets. Some of these gadgets include virtual reality headsets and 360- degree video cameras. This lab has been given the name "Area 404". The creation of this shows that Facebook is not content with just being the largest social media network in the world, they hunger for more.
Facebook's Research Lab Manager, Mikal Greaves stated that the reason they expanded the hardware lab that they already had was to "provide the complete design, prototyping, and testing capability inside Facebook. He talks about how it is a lot easier to have everything under one roof and allows for them to turn things around or get things done much quicker than they were able to beforehand. The people at Facebook let their engineers to go off and do their own thing, and having this new research lab with prototyping capabilities allows them to do everything right inside the lab. Having this lab will make the work the Facebook engineers do a lot faster, easier, and more efficient in the long run.
The creation of this lab shows that Facebook is branching out from being just a social media powerhouse. They are looking to become a leading company when it comes to cutting edge technology and the advancements of the future. Other companies in Silicon Valley have research labs such as this one, and Facebook wants to be in that group. They are now becoming players in Silicon Valley, and creating this lab shows that they too have the latest equipment and facilities needed to be a top dog in this competitive environment.
