Space Tourists
Virgin Galactic is on track to begin commercial passenger space flights before the end of next year. An airship designed to go close to, if not the edge of what is deemed the Karman line, the line that is said to be how far space is from Earth. The space plane is made to carry six passengers and two pilots to an altitude of about 62 miles. In the flight the passengers and crew are said to be able to experience a couple minutes of lower gravity, and also flying on the edge of space being able to observe space and Earth from extremely far up.They intend to base their commercial spaceflight service at New Mexico's Spaceport America, which was finished five years ago at a cost of nearly $220 million.
In October of 2014 there was a fatal crash during a test flight which resulted in the death of one pilot and leaving the other seriously injured, but they are still optimistic to being flying in the near future. The second in a planned fleet of Virgin spaceship's is undergoing testing in Mojave, California. So far the VSS Unity, has made three glide flights. They have not released to say when powered flights are to begin, or when commercial flights will start. Tickets to ride on the SpaceshipTwo are selling for 250,000 and about 500 people have already signed up to take a ride on it.
